Description

  • General description: Piperine is a naturally occurring bioactive alkaloid in pepper, which imparts pungency and bitter flavor to it.[1] It has demonstrated health benefits and exhibits therapeutic properties,[1] which include its role as an antimicrobial, antioxidant, antifungal,[2] immunomodulatory[1] and hepatoprotective agent.[2] The inhibition of drug-metabolizing enzymes in hepatic and pulmonary tissues, and the enhancement of drug bioavailability by this compound are reported.[2] It is also found to play an important role in reducing blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides.[1]
  • Application: Piperine may be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in:Human plasma using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS).[5]Piper nigrum extract using reversed phase high pressure liquid chromatographic method with UV detection (RP-HPLC-UV).[6]Food products using high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD).[7]
