Description
- General description: Lutein a non-provitamin A yellowish carotenoid, is commonly found in eggs, fruits, vegetables, vegetable oils and grains.[1] One of the most important beneficial effects of lutein is the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts .[2]
- Application: Lutein may be used as an analytical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in chicken liver[1] and vegetables/vegetable oils[2] using high-performance liquid chromatography.
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Dietary carotenoid with no vitamin A potency. Increases macular pigment concentration in the eye and may improve visual function.
