- TRPM8 is a receptor-activated non-selective cation channel involved in detection of sensations such as coolness, by being activated by cold temperature below 25 degrees Celsius
- TRPM8 is activated by icilin, eucalyptol, menthol, cold and modulation of intracellular pH and involved in menthol sensation
- TRPM8 is permeable for monovalent cations sodium, potassium, and cesium and divalent cation calcium
- TRPM8 has an expression pattern within normal human tissues that is mostly restricted to prostate epithelial cells
- TRPM8 mRNA expression is at moderate levels in normal prostate tissue and appears to be elevated in prostate cancer
- Notably, TRPM8 mRNA was also expressed in a number of nonprostatic primary tumors of breast, colon, lung, and skin origin, whereas transcripts encoding TRPM8 were hardly detected or not detected in the corresponding normal human tissues
