- General description: Aspartic acid is a non-essential amino acid.[1] L-Aspartic acid is a dicarboxylic amino acid, which is involved in the synthesis of nerve cells proteins. It also stimulates the depolarization of nerve cell membranes.[2] L-Aspartic acid acts as an amine donor for transamination reaction.[3]
- Application: L-Aspartic acid sodium salt monohydrate has been as a component of reservoir solution for crystallization.[4][5]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Selective outflow of L-aspartic acid across the blood-brain barrier controls the level of L and D aspartic acid in the brain. Increased levels of L-aspartic acid in the brain results in excitatory neurotoxicity.[6] Recent studies highlight that racemization of L-aspartic acid is followed by the determination of D:L ratio to estimate the age of an individual.[7]
