Description

  • General description: Magnolol is a bioactive neolignan extracted from the root and stem bark of different Chinese herbal Magnolia trees.[1] It has a hydroxylated bi-phenoid structure[2] like that of its structural isomer honokiol.[3] It is a lipophilic compound.[2]
  • Application: Magnolol has been used:to test its effect on muscle atrophy and macrophage subtypes in sarcopenia mouse model[2]to test its inhibitory effect on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) in angiogenesis assay[4]to test its anti-fungal effects on growth, ultrastructure, and biofilm formation of Candida spp. strains[5]in the preparation of immobilized amino-functionalized mesoporous silica particles for prolonged-release studies[6]
  • Biochem/physiol Actions: Magnolol exerts anti-depressant[7] and, neurodegenerative properties.[8] It is also considered to be a potent anti-cancer agent for its involvement in reducing cell proliferation, cell cytotoxicity, and inducing apoptosis.[1]
