Description

• Presumptively identify Legionella spp
• by satellite phenomena with Thermo Scientific™ Remel™ Non-supplemented Buffered CYE Agar (Buffered charcoal yeast extract-BCYE)
• BCYE Agar was developed by adding ACES buffer and α-ketoglutarate, which stabilized the pH and improved the isolation of Legionella pneumophila from contaminated clinical and environmental specimens 1,2
• Cysteine is essential for the growth of Legionella spp
• Isolates that grow on BCYE Agar containing L-cysteine but fail to grow on Non-supplemented BCYE Agar may be presumptively identified as Legionella spp 3–4
• Buffered CYE (BCYE) Agar Nonsupplemented is a solid medium recommended for the presumptive identification of Legionella spp 4
• BCYE Agar Nonsupplemented contains charcoal and yeast extract to enhance the growth of Legionella
• Charcoal also serves to absorb toxic metabolic products and modify the surface tension of the medium
• ACES Buffer maintains proper pH and α-ketoglutarate is added to stimulate growth
• Agar is a solidifying agent
