- Biochem/physiol Actions: Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) is part of the cytokine family. It signals through the glycoprotein 130 and LIF receptor β subunit. The protein has neuroprotective effects and activates astrocytes. CNTF also has a role in the differentiation of neural stem cells and is involved in neurotransmitter synthesis.[1][2][3][4]
