- General description: Conalbumin is an iron-binding protein. It is mainly present in the egg white of hen.[1] It is also termed as ovotransferrin.[2] It is a member of the transferrin iron-binding glycoproteins family.[3] Ovotransferrin is also known an an acute?phase protein (APP)in some organisms.[4] It is the second main protein found in egg white.[5]
- Application: Conalbumin from chicken egg white has been used: as ovotransferrin standard in 96?well microplate assay to investigate on ovotransferrin-like activity in the plasma of wild birds[4]to examine its effects on osteoclastogenesis[5]to study its partitioning in aqueous two-phase systems[6]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Conalbumin/ovotransferrin plays a key role in avian natural immunity.[7] It has the ability to prevent bacterial growth and possesses immunomodulatory functions.[4] Ovotransferrin also exhibits antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.[5]
