Description
- General description: Glyceraldehyde is a simple monosaccharide.[1] Based on the number of carbon atoms and the type of carbonyl group present, glyceraldehyde belongs to subgroup triose. It is a colourless and sweet compound.[2]
- Application: DL-Glyceraldehyde has been used:as modifying reagent in the preparation of crystallization solution[3] as a substrate to measure aldose reductase activity[4]in the preparation of d/l-glyceraldehyde stock to determine the specific activity of GAPDH (glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase)[5]
- Biochem/physiol Actions: Glyceraldehyde serves as an efficient cross-linking agent and is considered non-toxic.[1] It is an intermediate of a number of metabolic such as glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathway.[2]
- Other Notes: DL-Glyceraldehyde is a substrate for the enzyme aldose reductase.
