Description

  • Carboxylic acids react with alcohols in the presence of a strong acid
  • This is an equilibrium reaction, which means both reactants and products are present at some concentration
  • For example, when 1 mole of acetic acid and 1 mole of ethyl alcohol are mixed, 0.667 mole of the ester and 0.667 of water are produced, and 0.333 mole of acid and 0.333 mole of alcohol remain at equilibrium
  • The yield of ester can be increased either by removing one of the products of the reaction as it is formed or by increasing the concentration of one of the reactants
  • The normal procedure is to remove water using the dehydrating agent sulfuric acid, which also acts as the catalyst.
