- General description: Vanadium(III) chloride is a crystalline solid with variable oxidation states. It is widely used as a catalyst in organic synthesis, polymerization processes, and redox batteries. It acts as a reducing agent.
- Application: Vanadium chloride may be used as a reduction agent to determine nitrates and nitrites in water samples.[1]It may be used in redox flow batteries.[2] Vanadium trichloride catalyses Pinacol coupling reactions of benzaldehyde in water.[3] it also acts as a mild and efficient catalyst for the chemoselective deprotection of acetonides.[4]
